At rest, VA crystals stand along the light’s path, so they don’t twist its polarization — the crossed front polarizer blocks it and you get a deep black. Voltage tilts them; birefringence then rotates the polarization and light passes (bright). Because that depends on a tilt you view edge-on, contrast and color shift as you move off-axis — VA’s narrow-angle weakness.

How it works

VA is an LCD technology, so the panel never makes its own light — a backlight is always on behind it, and each pixel is a tiny shutter that lets more or less of that light through, tinted by a red/green/blue color filter.

In a VA panel the liquid crystals stand vertically (perpendicular to the glass) when no voltage is applied, which blocks the backlight very effectively. That is why VA blocks light better than any other LCD and produces its signature deep blacks — but rotating those crystals in and out of the way takes time, which is the root of its motion weakness.

Pros

  • The best contrast of any LCD. Native contrast of roughly 2,500:1 to 5,000:1 — three to five times an IPS panel’s ~1,000:1. In a dim room blacks look genuinely dark rather than grey, which makes VA the value pick for films and moody, dark games.
  • Clean dark scenes — little IPS-style glow. Because the crystals block the backlight so well, VA panels show much less of the corner “glow” and edge bleed that plague IPS on dark content, so black scenes stay uniform.
  • Bright and inexpensive. Paired with quantum-dot films and, increasingly, mini-LED backlights, VA hits high SDR and HDR brightness for far less money than OLED. It is the dominant panel in affordable curved ultrawides.
  • Immune to burn-in. As an inorganic LCD, a VA panel can display a static taskbar, HUD or spreadsheet forever with no risk of permanent image retention.

Cons

  • Black smearing — slow dark transitions. VA’s crystals are slowest to change when moving between dark shades, so dark objects moving over dark backgrounds leave a muddy trailing smear (“black smear”). It is the classic VA weakness and the reason VA is a compromise for fast, competitive games.
  • Narrow viewing angles. Contrast and gamma shift noticeably as you move off-centre; on a large flat VA the far corners look washed out or color-shifted from a normal seating position. This is a big reason VA ultrawides are almost always curved — the curve turns the edges back toward you.
  • Overdrive is hard to tune. Speeding the panel up with overdrive to fight smearing can overshoot and create inverse ghosting (bright halos behind moving objects), and a setting that looks clean at one refresh rate often misbehaves at another.
  • Dark detail can crush off-axis. Combined with the angle sensitivity, subtle shadow detail can disappear or “gamma shift” depending on exactly where your eyes are relative to the screen.
Best for: Dark-room media and immersive single-player games on a budget, especially curved ultrawides. Less ideal for competitive FPS or sharing the screen at an angle.
