The all-rounder — the best color and viewing angles in LCD, held back by grey blacks and IPS glow.
The always-on backlight is only ever blocked, never switched off — so a little light always leaks through “black”, raising it.IPS keeps its crystals in the screen’s plane and rotates them there. Between crossed polarizers that rotation twists the light’s polarization to pass the front filter (bright) or leaves it blocked (dark). Because the rotation happens in the plane you view head-on, the image barely shifts off-axis — wide, stable angles — but the in-plane layout can’t block the backlight perfectly, so blacks look greyer (IPS glow).
How it works
IPS is also a backlit LCD — an always-on backlight shines through a liquid-crystal shutter and an RGB color filter. What sets it apart is that the crystals rotate within the plane of the screen (parallel to the glass) rather than tilting toward you.
Keeping the crystals in-plane means the light you see barely changes as your line of sight changes, which is why IPS holds its color and contrast so well off-axis. The trade-off is that this arrangement lets a little backlight through even when a pixel is meant to be black, so blacks are raised.
Pros
+Best-in-class viewing angles.Color and contrast stay stable well off-centre, so the whole screen looks uniform even on wide or tall panels and when several people share it — the standard choice whenever angle consistency matters.
+Accurate, wide-gamut color.IPS delivers excellent, uniform color with wide gamut coverage (full sRGB and most of DCI-P3 on good units), which is why it is the default for photo, video and design work.
+“Fast IPS” motion without OLED prices.Modern Fast IPS panels reach ~1 ms grey-to-grey with far less dark smearing than VA, giving clean, responsive motion for gaming at a fraction of an OLED’s cost.
+No burn-in; bright, and great with mini-LED.Inorganic, so static UI is safe forever, and IPS pairs well with mini-LED backlights to push high, sustained brightness for HDR.
Cons
-Low native contrast — grey blacks.Around 1,000:1 native contrast means blacks look dark grey rather than black in a dim room. This is IPS’s defining weakness and the flip side of its great angles.
-IPS glow.A silvery, angular sheen over dark content in the corners, worst when you sit close or off-axis. It shifts as you move your head, distinguishing it from fixed backlight bleed.
-Backlight bleed.Light leaking around the panel edges shows up on dark scenes. How much varies unit to unit — a bit of a “panel lottery”.
-Limited HDR without mini-LED.An edge-lit IPS cannot switch off light behind dark areas, so HDR contrast is modest. Mini-LED local dimming helps a lot but adds cost and can cause blooming (a halo of light around bright objects on black).
Best for: Color-critical work, mixed use, bright rooms, and any time people view the screen from an angle. Less ideal for dark-room cinema where deep blacks matter most.
